Chapter 1 - The Sleeping Shark

Diving with sharks is a thrilling experience.

In fact, attracting them with bait to witness how they feed has become an activity that generates significant income around the world. Whether a shark is large or small, of one species or another, we must never forget that they are wild animals. Offering them food will trigger a natural reaction inherent in the predator: the attack.

Sharks have specialised organs to locate their prey. Some are able to smell them from a distance; others detect the electric fields of those buried in the sand. Once they sense them, they capture them with little margin for error.

But I never expected to become the prey myself, or to have to wait three long minutes before ascending to the safety of the boat. All the while, the threat of being attacked again loomed over me. Because even though I longed to return quickly to the surface, I had to complete the “safety stop.” Though not mandatory, it is recommended—usually three minutes at five metres deep. Its main purpose is to reduce the risk of decompression sickness, eliminating the excess nitrogen accumulated in the tissues during the dive. I was well aware of the consequences of not respecting the stop time. I was bleeding profusely and my hand throbbed. Suspended five metres below the surface, the countdown felt infinite. I endured the violence of the act while my strength ebbed away and the blood kept flowing…
